Bulls see Red against The Ambers

7 August 2021

The FA Cup

Extra Preliminary Round

Handsworth 2 – 0 AFC Mansfield

5 minutes of madness condemned AFC Mansfield to an early exit from the FA Cup at The Express Worktops Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Andy Gascoigne from the penalty spot and a Leon Howarth strike 4 minutes later did the damage.

But it was The Bulls lack of discipline that really cost them, keeper Jason White picked up a yellow for a shove on Sam Smith which resulted in the opening goal, Manager Phil Buxton picked up a yellow for arguing with the Referee and Kacper Rajter received two yellows leaving the visitors down to 10 men for the last 15 minutes.

The visitors had started brightly and should have been in front after just 5 minutes. A cross field ball from Rajter found Jack Gibb on the right, his cross into the box found the boot of Lynton Karkach but the striker guided his effort narrowly wide.

Sam Smith goes close for Handsworth but fires into the side netting.

White acrobatically tipped Leon Howarth’s edge of the box drive over the bar on 11 minutes and 2 minutes later Luke Walker fires wide for the visitors from 20 yards.

On 38 minutes White does well to block Ben Teasdale’s effort the Handsworth man picks up the loose ball but a superb tackle from Gibb denies him a shot on an open goal.

A stinging drive from Karkach is well held by Townsend on 44 minutes and the sides go in level at Half time.

Handsworth started the 2nd half the brighter of the two sides and had a couple of half chances from Haworth and substitute Gascoigne.

But on 58 minutes it all went wrong for AFC Mansfield Smith barged into keeper White with the ball in his hands and White pushed the striker away. The referee and linesman had a long conversation and eventually the man in the middle booked White and awarded a penalty which Gascoigne fire home to put The Ambers in front.

4 minutes later and The Bulls fate was sealed when Haworth raced into the box after what looked like a foul and fired past White. In the protests after Rajter received his 1st yellow card.

James Oliver could have made it 3-0 on 64 minutes but White gets down well to save from the midfielder.

Townsend then claims a cross as the visitors look for a way back into the game.

A flurry of substitutions as both sides look to influence the game. Karkach fires wide of the mark on 75 minutes.

The misery is complete for The Bulls as first Manager Buxton gets booked and then Kacper Rajter receives his marching orders with a 2nd yellow for a clumsy tackle in the middle of the park on 81 minutes.

The Bulls continued to battle but had a mountain to climb, Handsworth claiming victory and a home tie in the next round against Stocksbridge Park Steels.
